THE DALAI LAMA

MESSAGE

When so much of the Tibetan cultural heritage has been destroy in its own land,
I am very happy to know that a Tibetan Museum has been established on the premises of the Dae Won Temple
in Kwangchu District of South Korea.

The collection of 600 thangkas in the museum's possession is certinly important,

but it is equally important that the general public should have access to them.

Displaying these paintings in the new Tibetan Museum will allow visitors to form a deeper appreciation of
the richness and refinement of Tibetan Culture, which is an expression of an ancient civilization.

We Tibetans regard such paintings as sacred, for they represent aspects of enlightenment.
They are a source of inspiration. We say that for a Buddhist practitioner their function is to support faith,
because they encourage the aspiration to acquire the qualities the images represent.

Tibetan civilization forms a distinct part of the world's precious common heritage.
Humanity would be the poorer if it were to be lost. Those of us Tibetans in exile have made every effort to preserve and promote it,
but we will not succeed in isolation We require help and support such as is being given at the Dae Won Temple.

I believe that if people can visit this exhibition and have access to informative explanations of their significance, they will come to a
better understanding of the Tibetan people and their traditions. On the occasion of the opening of the Museum,

I offer my greetings to all concerned and pray that your efforts will contribute to saving Tibetan culture from disappearing forever

and will also serve as a source of inspiration to Korean people, Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike.
